About Our Road Captains

Woodstock Chapter #5668 Road Captains are the backbone of our chapter rides. They lead group rides, promote safe group riding, and create the structure that allows everyone to enjoy the ride with confidence.

Our mission: Deliver safe, organized, and enjoyable group rides in a fun and welcoming environment.

What Road Captains Do

Road Captains help plan, organize, and lead chapter rides.
  • Plan and lead chapter rides
  • Set the pace and maintain group integrity
  • Conduct safety briefings before rides
  • Educate riders on group riding techniques
  • Communicate hand signals and ride expectations
  • Coordinate with Sweep riders
The Harley Owners Group national organization has specified responsibilities for Road Captains:
  • Assist the sponsoring dealer and Chapter Director in upholding the Annual Charter for H.O.G. Chapters
  • Assist in planning routes for chapter rides
  • Assist in keeping the chapter informed of all H.O.G. programs
  • Educate chapter members about group riding techniques
  • Inform chapter members of any hand signals used by the chapter on group rides
  • Assist in obtaining signed release forms for chapter rides
  • Act as a guide for organized chapter rides
Our Road Captains are expected to lead with preparation, awareness, and professionalism.
  • Arrive early and prepared for every ride
  • Have a clear route and plan
  • Identify a Sweep rider before departure
  • Set expectations for pace, stops, and ride style
  • Maintain a safe, controlled group environment
  • Adapt to weather, traffic, and group needs
  • Prioritize safety over speed
Before departure, the Road Captain should review:
  • Route and destination
  • Fuel and regroup stops
  • Lead and Sweep roles
  • Staggered and single-file formation
  • Hand signals
  • Emergency or breakdown procedures
  • Return ride expectations
We are always looking for riders who want to step up and help lead the chapter. A good Road Captain is someone who:
  • Enjoys group riding
  • Rides safely and predictably
  • Communicates clearly
  • Has strong awareness and decision-making skills
  • Wants to contribute to the chapter
If you are interested in becoming a Road Captain, please contact the Head Road Captain.

Why It Matters

Great rides do not happen by accident. They happen because Road Captains put in the time to plan, lead, and create an experience that keeps riders safe, organized, and excited to come back for the next ride.
